April 29-May1: Penguicon lands at the Troy Marriott

maddog's Challenge:

If you are a dreamer, come in...

Necessity is the Mother of Invention. During Jon "maddog" Hall's footnote to Penguicon 7.0, he issued a challenge. The challenge came in two parts: 1.) envision the near-term world as you would like to see it 2.) figure out how to use free software to reach that near-term goal. Last year we took this challenge one step closer by holding a panel at the convention where an innovative and inspiring discussion ensued. The plan was for those of you that are interested in helping shape the path of the world to come to spend the year developing the software plan, to present at Penguicon, where we can vote on which vision to follow, and all collectively create that software. We are pushing this challenge forward into this year's con. That's right, even if you are not a programmer--even if you hate computers--you can bring the inspiration to a group of coders, developers, hackers, and makers and potentially see your vision created. Basically, anything goes, the important part is for you to bring your unique vision--your unique path--to the rest of us.

Sign up right now!

You have 20 days to put together an idea. The only requirement is that you can talk about this idea for about a page lengths of text. This should give us a good understanding of your proposed idea. The Eco Geek Staff is your audience so keep in mind that you should probably define terms, as well as spell out acronyms. The Eco Geeks are a diverse panel of awesome people, so you can bet that at least one of us will know what you are talking about.

Please submit these to ecogeek@penguicon.org by April 29, 2011.

Winners will be announced henceforth! Um... Prizes will be announced henceforth-ish as well!

BOOM! Frontalot, Thursday April 28th, FREE! [Apr. 1st, 2011|12:37 pm]
Penguicon News

Our Guest of Honor, MC Frontalot, will be performing solely for Penguicon attendees on Thursday, April 28th! He goes on at 8pm, and you MUST register for Penguicon in order to listen to him on our Main Stage the night before the convention.

Please RSVP at the Penguicon.org web site for admission.

The video below the title song (video premiered yesterday!) from his album Zero Day. It co-stars other nerdcore artists ytcracker and int80 of Dual Core.

We will be collecting canned goods for Gleaners Community Food Bank, so please bring some to donate!

MC Frontalot first coined the phrase "nerdcore", and the decade since then has seen the genre of nerdcore hip-hop rapidly expanding in popularity. He has appeared at every Penny Arcade Expo from 2004 to 2010, and his songs "Penny Arcade Theme" and "Which MC Was That?" both appear in the dance video game In the Groove. His track 'Final Boss' featured over the end credits in the 2008 game Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness - Episode 1. His songs "Living At the Corner of Dude and Catastrophe" and "Origin of Species" (a satire of Creation Science) are available as downloadable tracks for Rock Band.

His antics have been captured in Nerdcore Rising, a documentary/concert film starring Frontalot and various other nerdcore artists such as mc chris, Optimus Rhyme and MC Lars with a contribution from Weird Al Yankovic. The film premiered at the 2008 South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas and combines interviews about nerdcore and its origins, with footage of Frontalot's 2006 Nerdcore Rising national tour.

Frontalot was also interviews (as the reigning voice of nerdery) in the documentary The People vs. George Lucas, which premiered at the 2010 SxSW.

Ever thought of pursuing a con career as an Ops staff member? Do you like to help make sure things run smoothly at con?

Christine, Head of Ops, is looking for Ops Staffers to work the booth during con.

The shifts are four hours each and you need to work two of them to be able to register at the staff rate.

There is an a great need people who want to work and a greater need for those willing to work overnights.

Email ops@penguicon.org if you are interested.

key:
On-Site Operations (or Ops as it is called) is the nerve center of the convention during the operating hours of the convention. Lost something or someone? Got a question, problem or emergency? You could be one of the friendly and knowledgeable folks in Ops, located in what the hotel calls the Coat Room.
You may not know the answer, but you'll probably know where to get it.
